Standby Signal, No.1 was updated at 1:45 a.m. on 2 September
Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.
The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.
This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.
At 2 a.m., Tropical Storm Saudel was estimated to be about 250 kilometres east-southeast of Hong Kong (near 21.2 degrees north 116.3 degrees east) and is forecast to move northeast at about 12 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea. Saudel is skirting at over 200 kilometres to the southeast of Hong Kong. Its outer rainbands are bringing squally showers and thunderstorms to the coast of Guangdong. Saudel is expected to edge closer to the coast of eastern Guangdong on Wednesday (2 September). Under the combined effect of Saudel and the northeast monsoon, local winds will be occasionally strong offshore and on high ground.
Unless Saudel intensifies significantly and its associated strong winds are closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary, the chance of strong winds generally over Hong Kong is not high. The chance of issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 on Wednesday is relatively low. The Standby Signal, No. 1 will remain in force on Wednesday morning.
According to the present forecast, Saudel will linger around the vicinity of the northeastern part of the South China Sea and the coast of eastern Guangdong on Thursday (3 September). There are rather large uncertainties in its subsequent movement and intensity. Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals may remain in force until the latter part of this week. Members of the public should continue to pay attention to the latest weather information issued by the Observatory.
1. Precautions should be taken. Drains should be cleared of obstructions, and windows and doors should be checked.
2. People in areas of exposed to high winds or in low-lying areas should take precautions against strong winds and flooding.
3. Flights at Hong Kong International Airport may be affected by the weather. Please contact your airline for the latest flight information before departing for the airport.
4. There will be swells. You are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.
5. Fishing vessels and low power vessels in open sea should seek shelter as soon as possible and be secured properly with moorings.
